Sharps is an interactive swarm of flying triangles for iPhone & iPad, available now on iTunes for the dangerously low price of 99 cents.
This was the first or second iPhone app I ever made, and I’ve been rewriting it over and over for the last two years as I keep learning more about the platform. The “big” apps I’m working on during the day won’t be coming out until next year so I thought it’d be fun to release something small in the meantime.
It’s a very simple toy, not even a game. All you do is touch the screen and the triangles swarm around your fingertip, but you may find it surprisingly habit-forming. It’s a digital worry stone, a stirring rod for your thoughts.
The flocking algorithm is based on the legendary Boids by Craig Reynolds, which has long fascinated me for producing very lifelike behavior with very simple rules. It was also a great way to learn about programming animation and modeling a living simulation.
Anyway, I think it’s fun so try it out!
