will you admit, to yourself, that you made a mistake? What was the alternative? I’ll never consider voting against McCain a mistake. We do the best we can with what we have.
I meant, a mistake in believing in him. In believing we had at least one good choice.
Voting for president has always been about choosing the least evil dude. Obama is just the least evil dude we’ve seen in a while. Even if he winds up making poor choices he’s already united the people and given them hope in a way we haven’t seen in years and that means he’s already done something very good.
“One good choice” will mean something different to everyone, just like the word “change.” It’s too nebulous a concept to hold it up to any kind of scrutiny. It evokes whatever you want to see changed in your own mind, while the next guy over might be thinking exactly the opposite. I don’t see “change” as a promise that everything in the country will be configured exactly the way I like it, I see it as a promise to end the fearmongering and divisiveness that was the true cancer of the last administration.
My “one good choice” is a pure pacifist who will cut the military in half and put the proceeds towards science and education, all the while ending the drug war and taxing the rich up the asshole. I never believed Obama would do that, but I still think he’s the best guy for the job under the circumstances. Don’t believe the conservative whine that everyone who likes Obama thinks he’s Jesus.
