Despite all the bad press, the new Sim City is incredibly good.
The UI should win an award. The way they’ve done curved roads is hard to describe, but it’s an extremely clever blend of creative freedom and strategic constraint. When you draw straight roads they can optionally snap to guides, but once you draw a crazy curved road the guides intelligently match the craziness of the curve, so you can repeat the same crazy curve in a grid or make it radiate out in different directions.
And that’s just the roads; the same attention to detail has been applied throughout the whole design of the game. Sure it’s got flaws and bugs and stuff but I think it transcends them all. My only complaint is that I keep running out of room, but I hear they’ll be adding bigger maps soon. It comes out for Mac in the next couple weeks. Game of the year.
