Another example of a personal audio site, LastButNot by Joe Lazarus, who also posts instructions on how to make your own. I thought this was cool because it’s built entirely from existing services (Last.fm, Hype Machine, Yahoo! Pipes, Tumblr) in a way I didn’t think was possible. Radio JSTN, by contrast, runs on a platform called Kettle that I’ve been writing from scratch. So far it’s only for myself, but I’m working to make it available for anyone who wants to sign up. I’m looking for the exact opposite of automation, though. I want to make something that encourages being very selective about the music included. It’s my (naïve?) belief that more care in production begets more care in consumption. Last.fm is great, but the the drek I listen to all day at work isn’t necessarily the face I want to put on my musical taste, I’d rather you listen to this mixtape over here…
